Legendary rocker, poet and artist Patti Smith pens a song for Amy Winehouse on her forthcoming album.
Patti Smith known as the “Godmother of Punk”, wrote a poem for Amy Winehouse when she died.
While Patricia Lee “Patti” Smith was recording her latest album, Patti’s bass player Tony Shanahan wrote a piece of music that matched perfectly with the poem Patti wrote for Amy.
Patti Smith was reported as saying, “The little song for Amy just blossomed in the studio.
We were at New York recording studio Electric Lady doing a whole other song and I wrote Amy a little poem when she died and my bass player, Tony Shanahan, wrote a piece of music and the two matched perfectly.
“We wrote a very nice little song for Amy Winehouse, and I think a beautiful song for Maria Schneider, the actress who was a friend of mine in the ’70s. They just happened, like gifts.”
As one of the early pioneers of New York City’s punk scene, Patti has been creating her unique blend of poetic rock and roll for over 35 years. Patti Smith’s most widely recognised song Because The Night, was co-written with Bruce Springsteen. Because The Night reached number 13 on the Billboard music charts in 1978. Patti Smith was also inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2007.
