‘Our darling daughter should be here’: Amy Winehouse’s parents accept posthumous Grammy on her behalf from Tony Bennett

Whitney Houston wasn’t the only singer to be honoured at the 2012 Grammy awards.

Amy Winehouse, who died last July after consuming a fatal amount of vodka, won her first posthumous award tonight.

She was honoured for her duet with Tony Bennett on the track Body and Soul.

During tonight,s pre-telecast, the 85-year-old crooner took the Grammy stage to accept the trophy for Best Performance by a Pop Duo or Group with Winehouse’s parents.

After a huge round of applause, her father, Mitch, addressed the audience.

He said: ‘We shouldn’t be here. Our darling daughter should be here. But these are the cards that were dealt.’

He then spoke about founding a charity organisation in his daughter’s name.

‘We formed the Amy Winehouse Foundation in her name. Our job is to help children in her name, primarily in the United Kingdom and the U.S.A. There’s lots of kids in the U.S.A. and the U.K. that need Amy’s help and your help.’

He then spoke about how much this particular Grammy had meant to his daughter, who died at the tender age of 27.

‘She (usually) never got excited about this kind of thing,’ he said. ‘She wasn’t allowed to come here because of visa problems, but she was so excited. Then when she got one, two, three, four Grammys… when she heard the announcement for Best Pop Vocal Album and they just said, “The winner is Amy Winehouse,” it was like liftoff.

‘It meant so much to her, and Tony’s collaboration has meant so much to her — and she was so excited about ‘Body and Soul,’ because it’s her favorite song.

Amy’s mother, Janis, also spoke briefly about her daughter.

She said: ‘Amy is with me and always will be with me. She will be with all of us.’

Ending the touching memorial, he added: ‘Long live Whitney Houston, long live Etta James, long live Amy Winehouse. There,s a beautiful girl band up there.’

Bennett embraced his winning duet partner’s mother, Janis, ending a very touching acceptance speech.

He did not give an acceptance speech of his own, allowing his deceased duet partner to receive her due credit.

Last night, the jazzy singer spoke at Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party about cracking down on the legalisation of drugs.

He expounded: ‘First it was Michael Jackson, then there was Amy Winehouse, and now the magnificent Whitney Houston. I’d like to have every gentleman and lady in this room commit themselves to get on government to legalize drugs.’
